Google Competes with FaceTime, Skype and Messenger

Better technology is no longer enough to capture a loyal market segment, you have to create something useful enough to persuade people to move away from their existing service, away from the familiar and where their friends are. This is something that Google is well aware and is reflected in their Mantra as they launched Duo.
Duo is a Video chat application that works on mobile devices that run on Google’s Android OS and Apple Inc.’s iOS. Duo runs on Wi-Fi and cellular networks and will automatically switch between the two depending on internet speeds and video quality.
The app also uses phone numbers as opposed to Google’s usual Gmail account requirement. This is intended to make it easier for a user to call family and friends already on their contact lists. Duo is intended to be just a mobile app that is limited to one to one video calling as Google converts their older communication app Hangout into a work place service, offering group video conferencing mostly through desktops.
